Ishmail Wainwright, a 6-6 forward, is the Mustangs’ lone early signee, inking his letter with Baylor University. For the season, he’s averaging 10 points, 9.4 rebounds, 8.6 assists and 3.0 steals per game. The Missouri native is a well-rounded player, delivering inch-perfect passes, playing lockdown defense, leading the fast break and using his physicality to influence the game. Wainwright has frontline help as 6-8 senior Mark Williams (16.0 ppg, 10.3 rpg) has caught the eye of programs such as Vanderbilt, South Florida, Alabama and Temple.
The Mustangs carry a nine-game win streak into the tournament, with a signature triple- overtime 54-53 victory over NHSI participant Oak Hill Academy (VA) on Jan. 30 in Beckley, W.Va. Junior forward Therence Mayimba’s three-pointer with 2.6 seconds left was the difference. Coach Stu Vetter’s squad took fourth at the Iolani Classic in Honolulu over the Christmas holiday, splitting four games with losses to Findlay Prep (NV) and Oak Hill.
